- This note was originally titled “folders make your brain itch”. Updated 2024-09-06
- NVDH mentions this in her ‘How I Structure my Obsidian Vault’ video, and I completely understand what she means. Folder structures always feel like they have a sense of finality and permanence, which can be difficult when your notes, thinking-process, and interests are evolving organically.
- I noticed a few weeks ago that, with the folder structure I was using then, I spent more time worrying about how to file a note than I spent on making sure the note was complete. I made some changes, which seemed to help, but there’s still this never-ending itch that wonders whether the structure I’m using is “right”.
- I think I’ve found a mostly-happy middle with organizing my notes into folder based on note type instead of category; all of my categorization happens through linking and MOCs.
- 2024-03-23 I was on the right track with note types, but after experimenting with Capacities, I’ve fully bought into object-based organization. I’m finding it super intuitive; an object can only be one type of thing, so feels like folders are the appropriate structure for that type of organization… More to say here!
- 2024-09-06 Object-based folders still rocking my world. I’m in the process / mostly finished setting up my vkid system, which helped me categorize get really clear on object types. I’m absolutely loving it so far and hoping it was worth the work in six months.
